  17. <p>     How can police in towns separated by hundreds of miles
  18. tell when a roaming serial murderer or rapist is at work? The
  19. FBI will soon provide a key with its new Combined DNA
  20. Identification System (CODIS). The computer program provides a
  21. universal registry of DNA traces found in the blood and semen
  22. samples the attackers often leave behind. All forensic labs in
  23. the U.S. will be asked to use the FBI's system, so that no
  24. matter where a person's DNA is tested, the record will be
  25. uniform. Using CODIS, authorities can tell if a faceless
  26. criminal has been detected elsewhere.
